January 2012
Mid-South Flute Society Competitions: March 23-24, 2012, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Young Artist Competition Ages: 18-30 Prizes: $1000, $500, $300. Application deadline: December 1, 2011. Requirements and further information on website. CSO Young Artists Competition  The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has announced the 2012 Young Artists Competition open to full-time high school students in grades 9-12 in Chicago. Applicants must be instrumentalists or vocalists between 13 and 19 years of age. Applications must be received by January 20, 2012. Twenty finalists will be chosen from the applications to audition live at Symphony Center on February 12. The grand prize winner will have an opportunity to perform on stage during a June 2012 Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert. Details online at cso.org/yac

Artist Gold Solo Competition The San Diego Flute Guild's 2012 Spring Flute Festival will be held at San Diego State University, Music Department  on Sunday, April 22. The Artist Gold Solo Competition will be held in conjunction with the festival.  This year competitions are open to flutists living outside the Greater San Diego area, however, the participant must be a current 2011-2012 San Diego Flute Guild Member.  Audition CDs are due January 30, 2012. Prizes: 1st Place $1000, 2nd Place $500, 3rd Place $250 For more information:  www.sandiegofluteguild.org

National Flute Association Competitions: Young Artist, Piccolo Artist, Baroque Flute Artist, High School Soloist, Convention Performers, Jazz Soloist, 
August 9–12, 2012 at the annual convention. Las Vegas, Nevada. Young Artist (under the age of 30) Prizes: $5000, $2500, $1000. Texas Flute Society Myrna Brown Competition, May 17–19, 2012, North Texas University, Denton. No age limit. Prizes: $1200 and recital, $500, $250. New York Flute Club Competitions: Young Musicians Competition,  will be held on March 4, 2012 at the Greenwich House Music School located at 46 Barrow St. in New York City from 9:00-6:00 p.m.. There will be four categories: age 8 and under, 9 to 11, 12 to 14, and 15 to 17 years old (based on age as of March 1). The winners from each category will perform in concert with the winners of the NY Flute Club Competition at the Engelman Recital Hall, Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue (entrance on 25th Street), New York, NY, on April 22, 2012. Registration deadline: February 17  www.nyfluteclub.org

Atlanta Flute Club, 1st Annual Junior Artist Competition
 will take place at the Flute Fair in Atlanta on

March 2012 
Rising Stars Music Competition March 10, 2012, College of Saint Elizabeth. Ages: 16-22. Prize: $1,000. The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey has announced the 2012 Pearl and Julius Young Rising Star Music Competition for instrumentalists ages 16-22. Ten finalists will be chosen to perform at The College of Saint Elizabeth on
March 10, 2012. The finalists will perform one movement from a concerto from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Modern eras. The first prize winner will perform at the orchestra’s summer music festival in August and receive $1,000. The second and third prize winners receive $500 and $250 respectively.  http://baroqueorchestra.org

The Firebird Chamber Ensemble’s  2nd Annual Fred Moore Sr. Scholarship Competition

 Final round competitions will be held March 17, 2012 in Lexington, Kentucky. Winners will perform in concert with the Firebird Chamber Ensemble. Junior Soloist: up to 8th grade, Requirements: Minuet by Beethoven, and Allegretto by Benjamin Godard. Woodbridge Flute Choir Concerto Scholarship Competition March 25, 2012, Manassas, Virginia. Ages: 14-18. Prize: $500 scholarship.
